Makeup Fillers and Ingredients to Avoid

Many of us wear makeup on a daily basis, and we leave it on until it's time for bed (but let's admit, sometimes we all forget to take it off). When shopping for a new mattifying primer, you probably look for reviews on how well it fights against shine, how well it works, and if it’s a good value.

But do you ever look at the ingredients found in your favorite cosmetic products? You look at nutrition labels for your food, so you know what you're eating and putting in your body. So why wouldn't you look at the ingredients of the products you put directly on your face every morning?

What Is a Filler?

Just like a food product, companies use fillers because they are cheaper to manufacture, and sometimes they can be just as effective as their natural counterparts. Even so, much of the best food you find will have a shorter ingredients list, and makeup and skincare products should be the same. Harmful synthetic chemicals may be lurking in your makeup bag, but you might not realize it. Let's take a look at the harmful fillers and ingredients you should look to avoid in your cosmetics.

Parabens

Parabens are a class of preservatives that are common in body lotion, face cleansers, body wash, and more. Although they can prevent the growth of bacteria and mold, the harmful effects aren’t worth it. Research shows this ingredient may alter important hormone mechanisms in the body, which can cause serious health issues. Parabens can be hard to avoid as they’re found in a good majority of cosmetics,so look for products explicitly labeled “paraben free.”

Triclosan

Commonly used as an ingredient in soap bars, toothpaste, and liquid soap, this filler is damaging to the aquatic environment and may potentially impact the human reproductive system. Although the FDA restricted its use back in 2016, when purchasing cosmetics (particularly internationally), be leery of anything labeled "antimicrobial."

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

This ingredient is found in many cream-based cosmetic products such as foundation or concealer. Its purpose is to help skin and hair more effectively absorb products, and while it is effective in this regard, it is often contaminated with harmful chemicals such as ethylene oxide. SLES can also cause acne and skin irritation. Check the ingredient label for sulfates and polyethylene glycol to avoid this harmful ingredient.

Caprylyl Glycol

Cosmetic companies will include this ingredient as a skin conditioning agent in their lipsticks, foundations, eyeshadows, and mascaras. It carries risks like other glycol derivatives,so it’s best to seek a natural alternative. Make sure to only buy lengthening mascara that is free of this harmful synthetic chemical as well as the other items mentioned above. One that is pigmented with natural ingredients such as black tea, cocoa, and berries will help condition and accentuate lashes safely.

Synthetic Fragrance

Finally, you should be wary of any artificial or synthetic fragrances. Companies can get away with merely listing “fragrance” without going into the specific components that make up the scent of their product. It might not sound any alarms to read “fragrance” on a label, but that synthetic fragrance could be any combination of over 3,000 stock chemical ingredients, many of which may be hormone disruptors or allergens. Look for products that use natural ingredients like lavender or flower water to make their products smell nice.
